Prisons for Young People – People often ask where young people in Victoria go when they are sentenced to immediate imprisonment?
There are two custodial centres for children and young persons in Victoria:
Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct: Located in rural Victoria for young men aged 18-21 years of age. There is a mixture of low and high security units.
Parkville Youth Justice Precinct: Located in the Melbourne suburb of Parkville. There are 2 main areas of the Precinct – one for males and one for females. The Precinct accommodates:
- 10-18 year old males – remanded and/or sentenced by a Victorian Court;
- 10-17 year old females – remanded and/or sentenced by a Victorian Court; and
- 18-21 year old women sentenced to a Youth Justice Centre Order by an adult Court in Victoria.
While detained, the child or young person must attend schooling and participate in programs to reduce their risk of reoffending.
